Okay, so I admit, I’m a geek.
I’m an adjusted geek, but I still measure pretty high on the scale of geekdom. I play games, RPGs, toy with *nix, do networking and cryptography work and pretty intense IT related stuff. I’m in to anime, manga, and while I don’t… well usually spend my weekends compiling a I DM a game of D&D, and am an avid player as well.
So bearing on that, yes, I dm a game of D&D, and I tend to get quite ‘in’ to my games as well. When done right, a game of D&D with the right GM or even AS a good GM can be envigorating for all players, interesting, even addictive. There are thousands upon thousands of players with stories of bad GMs, and hell, I’ve even had chats with fellow GM types that even made me cringe and wonder ‘Why would anyone do that to their players?‘. In fact, the average conversation I have with other GMs I meet online (and it’s a sad fact that either I hang out with the TRULY wrong crowds or I am in the vast minority in the style of game I choose to run) sort of runs down like this…
’so did you end up getting a TPK?’‘…well no, there wasn’t a reason for the monster to have…’‘Oh come on, that’s the point! Did you at least kill anyone?’‘…’
It’s not that hard to run a campaign style game, and I guess it’s just my style of game that makes people get attached to their characters and everyone enjoys. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the fun in having to re-roll characters over and over again, it’s quite fun to go from zero-to-hero as opposed to one shot dungeon crawls, but I digress. ON TO BAD EXAMPLES!Dungeon Majesty is a public access cable tv show done… well I don’t quite know where honestly, but it’s kind of an utter cliche on just how bad things can be. I mean, it’s good for them to be doing what they enjoy, yes, but to quote many of my non D&D playing friends (those that usually dislike the game, actually), they state that the following set of videos are pretty much the reason they’d never play D&D - for fear of it being this bad. Enjoy the video!
A sort of intro.
Adventures with undead… or something.
Adventures with undead part two, electric boogaloo.

Ah, the joys of paper and pen role-playing games. It’s too bad some DMs/GMs play these games like they were still 10-years old and playing a game of HeroQuest. A good DM/GM at his best should be a good story-teller. It’s his (or her) job to immerse players in a fantastic universe, to make them feel part of something bigger then themselves. On the other hand, if there’s no real present danger, than that also takes away from the game, so in the end, a good “actions vs. consequences” balance needs to be established from the get go. In the end, this may require too much thought for some people, and may be why there are so few great DM/GM.
