I’ve been busy since my return from Montreal, so the post is a bit delayed.   July 31st to August 2nd was Otakuthon in Montreal.  This year sees me visiting not one Canadian con for the first time but two.  I got to experience the French side of otaku-ism here in our region.  Since I favor viewing and reading my anime and manga in English, I don’t often get exposed to french Otaku culture.

I was asked there on behest of Hendane, you readers that followed by blog before the big pause know them as good friends of mine, as not only have I been a multi-year customer of the gang since Sakuracon 2006.  Since Quebec as a province is vastly French, and the backwards laws they have here prevent students from being functionally bilingual for the most part, unlike New Brunswick, the amount of people that talk English enough to get a good grasp of what we are telling them is pretty low.  So they employed me as a salesman and translator, and named me “Gabe de Los Angeles” – well not really but they put something on the badge because they didn’t know how to tell them how to spell my name.  XD

    Montreal at a distance

I have to admit I have been pretty lazy updating as of late, the downsizing did indeed affect me a bit worse than I expected; so I spent time getting into shape and thinking about what I wanted to do with my future.  Such subjects are heavy, after all; needless to say I didn’t make the transition to Japan as I had originally wanted.  Not a decision enjoyed taking but not one I had to take lightly either.

In any case, the summer’s been full of travel, training and swag.  I’ve been broadening my skills along with a handful of close friends that are doing so at the same time.  I’ve not stopped collecting items, and in fact I’ll be putting up a swag post soon from the latest convention I attended, Otakuthon 2009.  That and working to better the blog design I was running did take up a heck of a lot of time.  I think it was worth it.

The blog design isn’t the only thing that’s new, those that follow twitterfeed know that the old server that was recently replaced with a new box.  It’s now running on a AMD Phenom II Black with 6 gigs of ram.   Compared to the AMD Athlon XP 2700 with 1.5 gigs of ram, you can imagine why the page load times are much faster than before.  More about all these changes and such under the cut~

Hey readers! Sorry if things look messy or out of line. I’m in the middle of a live test and transition, so things look a bit messed up at the moment.

Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon and actually posting. Life is starting to calm down again.

Not good news for North American collectors of doujinshi, especially if you’re in America.

    http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/05/manga-porn/

Legal precedent has been set in the states for people possessing manga/doujinshi portraying any minor in a a questionable situation with a trial that has been finished with a guilty verdict (under the 2003 Protect Act), which means that unless this is appealed, that all other collectors are open to the same judgment.  Hooray for Legal Precedents.   As Wired already states in their post, there’s some sort of legal defense fund that’s starting up regarding this situation but I honestly don’t think we’ll see any change in the verdict.

Given as a heads-up, below this cut I give my own opinion on the matter…

It’s been a long long time since I’ve done my usual Livefeed, so let’s have at it!

For those interested, there is information available  …at this link…, however the next livefeed is starting a bit earlier.   I plan to start it up at aprox 4:30 (16:30) EST, as usual at GMT -5:00.  I’ll be talking a bit more about Dakimakura and perhaps even showing how to hand-wash one live among other things.

I also have some swag from AnimeNorth and Sakuracon to show if people wish to see, and there’s much to talk about as well in the world of Otaku.  Feel free to tell your friends and join me at the following link on Feed-day.   As always the post will be at the link below:

Lastwear are people that take costuming beyond the norm of simply-being in a costume and add depth.  Each costume they create and wear has a story in depth, detail, purpose.  They have more creativity in their little fingers than I do in most of my body and it shows.

I had the pleasure of being involved in a photoshoot with them – and I’m going to talk more about them in the next post here coming up tomorrow.

I figured that people may want a preview of what I’ll be talking about so here’s the link to the set for the photoshoot – it’s not anime related but it’s impressive nonetheless and relevant to my interests.   I give you, Photoshoot #1 of Lastwear.com’s creations:  The Amber Guard
